Forced love

Distant Love

by brenda bickers

Was I too blind to glimpse what I now see,
betrothed to take another maiden’s hand--
to witness evermore what’s part of me,
as sure as sun that beats upon the land?
Just as a rainbow arcs to meet its end,
it’s destined to behold a pot of gold.
I took you in my arms to comprehend
a jewel now in my hands that I can hold.
Yet we are set a thousand miles apart--
a romance that will dance on distant shores.
My love, I send to thee on cupid’s dart,
And know that you are mine and I am yours.
For are we not the ones who guide our fate?
All those who come by chance have come too late.

Throughout history Noblemen and women have been used as pawns
to marry for the benefit of their realm rather than love.
Many of these were doomed to fail, especially if from a distance.
A few however were an exception to the rule.
This is one of them.
