ekphrastic free verse

A chapter in the book Selections For Book Project

with the wink of an eye

it is clever
in its endeavor

the hush of darkness
  whispers its plan
    through the tiniest crack
 
the idle root
thinks only of escape
         of getting out
            and about

ancient tales
of light
    arrive
       through the seepage

dampness
keeps hope shivering

unseen
   'neath the clean
           cement sea
 
a glint
    signals the race

every dream
     shimmies up
           and through
                 and      out
 
the world is vast
(they said it would be)
 
I am the most
beautiful sight
in all the world

I strain towards the light
          and shadows dance
                             beneath
                               me
 
it is thought
that
     life
       continues
    after
life
 
the light goes out
with the wink of an eye
as I fly upwards
