"To Jerry"

"Hear the wind whistling through the pines, my friend?  Oh, what an awesome sound it is," I whispered.  Sweet, Jesus! We forged the fire in the pits of hell--we yelled, "hurrah," then fought on.  When the smoke cleared away, I came home alone sitting next to you in a box.

I remember well, holding your head in my lap as you smiled and said, "Gotta go now, bury me under a pine tree back home.  I wanna watch the little deer--come near,  and hear the baby birds sing happy songs."

"Look and listen, my friend," I said softly.

Oh, we beat the drum and clashed the cymbals. The blood and guts of it all is etched on my mind. There are times even today that I will beat my fist into the wall until it bleeds and yet, the demon's still bite at my heart. Standing alone on the Hallowed Grounds, as the golden rays of a setting sun kisses the sky, I seem to hear the sound of TAPS. The gut-wrenching sound echoes across the headstones of our brave men and women, then against the Ears of God. "Hurrah," I whisper, then say goodbye to them all. It is an honor for me to dedicate this story to my dear friend, Jerry. Thank you for reading my work. Best wishes wherever you are.
