A Villanelle

A Need for Love

by tfawcus

Some days, the world is all too much to bear;
a monstrous banshee wails and thunders by,
and I have need of love to calm my fear...

a simple hug that shows me that you care,
a kiss to bring me comfort when I cry.
Some days, the world is all too much to bear.

I long to feel your fingers stroke my hair,
for now my sense of self is none too high,
and I have need of love to calm my fear.

I love the city’s razzmatazz and glare,
but there are also times that terrify.
Some days, the world is... all too much to bear!

I can be brave. I know I can. So there!
But sometimes I am not, although I try,
and I have need of love to calm my fear.

In time, I’ll meet with those who only jeer,
despising any weakness that they spy,
and, when the world becomes too much to bear,
I'll need your love again, to calm my fear.

The villanelle consists of five stanzas of three lines (tercets) followed by a single stanza of four lines (a quatrain) for a total of nineteen lines. It is structured by two repeating rhymes and two refrains: the first line of the first stanza serves as the last line of the second and fourth stanzas, and the third line of the first stanza serves as the last line of the third and fifth stanzas. The rhyme-and-refrain pattern of the villanelle can be schematized as A1bA2 abA1 abA2 abA1 abA2 abA1A2 where letters ("a" and "b") indicate the two rhyme sounds, upper case indicates a refrain ("A"), and superscript numerals (1 and 2) indicate Refrain 1 and Refrain 2.

Some minor variations to the refrain are permissible.
