a bit of my history

Desperate Years

by Cindy Warren

Sometimes my friends sing the saddest song
Sharing all the sorrows of love gone terribly wrong
"He's run off with another, the dirty bloke
And now my poor heart is broke."

I hold my tongue and sympathize
With woeful tales of cheating and lies.
I'll never tell them how lucky they are,
That my tale is more frightening by far.

Tho for a time things seemed good
He didn't love me and never would.
I believed in his promises, but in the end
Found myself alone without a friend.

He was my world for two years or so
Till I was home alone with babies and no place to go.
Not a dime in my pocket, no change for a bus
Life was unpleasant for the three of us.

I wanted him gone, I yearned to be free,
Things I believed could never be.
With threats he'd leave with the kids, I'd never see them again
I did as he bid and pushed down my pain.

Ten years of my life I live in something like Hell
Till one morning the police arrive ringing the bell.
Terror competes with relief as they take him away
And I'm left throwing up the rest of the day.

I must pull it together, some semblance of cool
Before my kids come home from school
I struggle for something profound to say
To convince myself and my kids we'll all be okay.

With my life suddenly twisted all about
No doubt I must quickly figure things out.
I get some assistance to go to school
And never again be anyone's fool.

It's been thirty-some years but the scars remain,
I've never been able to marry again.
Trust issues I have are attractive to none
But I'm strong and capable and get things done.

Recognized

I rarely write about myself, especially the hard stuff. This was a tough write. Tho it's impossible to describe things in detail in a few stanzas, this is essentially true.
