Lament about my son's life

A chapter in the book My Book of Poems 2010-2017

Prayers for Gregory

by Mustang Patty

He's still my little boy
Though he lives far away
He's grown into a man
Gone from where I stay

Once a source of joy
My youngest son
Thought drugs were a toy
And now they've won

I can't let him come home
Don't enable him they say
So the streets he does roam
Living day by day

Prayers for recovery
So once again he'll be
Happy and healthy
And home with me

This poem is based in truth. My son, Gregory, is addicted to crystal meth. He moved to Minneapolis about two years ago. Since he left, he has only come to visit for about 4 days. In that time, I was horrified at the extent of his addiction. Everyone has told me I can't enable the disease, so all I can do is pray.
