This Valentine's Mornin'

This Valentine's Mornin'

T'was a cold, clear morn, crisp frost binds her feet
He'd sworn, a sunrise, Valentine, they'd meet
Iced, when sailed yonder, God, aid his return
Ships, white-- armed with thunder, war, her concern

Vowed thus, his promise, a salute and rose
Ahoy! The shout! She in silent repose
Let the flute sound its longing; to love, bow
Engage fifes wailing, bring him home... somehow
Now four years of sunsets-- her last to be
Talk of him dying, on return from sea
In a drawer sealed, a letter, unread
No words to redeem... leave sorrows unsaid
Estranged, she retreats; her garden, in wait
Succumb to the cold, as planned now, her fate

Might the letter have read: ''Home, now to wed?''
One lingering thought-- yet, words he now said
Rushed, he had found her, eyes closed near the end
No! Not this day for slumber--love, a friend
In arms, twelve roses, her eyes quelled the dew
No more to part, ''How the skies seem so blue''
