Midnight's Journey to Morning

We found a stray cat right before some big rains were due, so.... we did what we do. We got all his shots and had him neutered. He turned out to have feline leukemia. He became deathly ill and we took him to the vet. After seven hundred dollars of care it was determined that putting him down would be the kindest act. We only had him for three weeks. Most of our pets live for an incredibly long time beating the expectations by a long shot. This little guy deserves his spot with them. We loved him every bit as much.
I tried to make this something children might relate to. It's a traumatic thing for adults and children as well, but harder to explain to kids. I was inspired by Domino's contest, but I'm too wordy as usual. :))
I didn't bother to use any particular meter or form. Just read it out loud and it should sound okay. (I hope)
As far as the ending, it's simplistic, but in a much more complex way, I do believe this.
Does this sound kid friendly?
