The Lotus

by mfowler

The bloom emerges from its midnight slumber.
In perfect pink it's dressed for light.
Untouched and pure, no stain, nor shade of umber
has touched its form throughout the night.
The lotus flower peels, its wings unfolding,
revealing beauty unsurpassed.
The sun, its muse, ascends the blue, beholding,
its creature of the night recast.
I sit and watch in shallow contemplation;
my mind distracted by life's dross.
The lotus floats in constant meditation
and empathises with my loss.
I take its pose, and breathe with steady motion,
aware of light and nature's sounds.
Released from thought and negative emotion,
I blend with love and my surrounds.

Something sacred touches all my being,
assuring life is right and good.
I feel connected without really seeing
life's hidden trees among the wood.
Amid the verdant plates the flower floats
above the muddy, darkened pond.
The queen is feted by its leafy boats
still masquerading as her fronds.
Tonight, she closes shape for beauty sleep.
Her muse retires til next new day.
I know because of her that I won't weep.
I'll contemplate her loving ways.

Lotus flowers are considered so sacred is due to their daily cycle. They emerge slowly from dirty, muddy ponds over a period of a few days, and open all in the morning, and close their petals in the late afternoon. Despite, emerging from such a muddy and dirty environment, the lotus flower remains clean; and not only this it is beautiful. Many civilizations have therefore associated the lotus flower with rebirth and especially in Buddhism with purity.
The state that the pink lotus flower is in is also representative of the state that a person is going through and the flower represents ones heart; when the flower is a just a bud it is synonymous with a closed in person who is yet to step up other way of spirituality.
As a flower blooms it comes to represent a place in opening up to all that is around them. The fully opened pink lotus flower represents a full sense of enlightenment.
