Seasonal Hide & Seek

by RodG

I love to watch each season reappear
like children playing games of hide and seek.
I'm "It" and quickly vanished is the year.
Precocious months will whisper, "Do not peek!"

Those springtime kids I spot so easily
as gaudy hues and zeal give them away
while summer can't conceal vitality,
nor growing ripeness every sun-blessed day.

But autumn always plays a bolder game.
Each waif deceives with flashy camouflage.
That crafty whelp called winter rates acclaim,
his hideaway a snow and ice collage.

Repeatedly these seasons hide then flee
home screaming "Olly, Olly, oxen free!"

Hide & Seek is played many ways. In my youth one person ("It") stood by a tree and closed his eyes and counted to a hundred while everyone else scattered and hid. After he completed his count, he'd open his eyes and if he spotted someone, he'd yell their name. He might go in search of the others, and if they were astute, they would find a way "Home" without being seen and tag the tree yelling "Olly, Olly, oxen free!" My friends and I would play this game during every season.

I wrote this sonnet to appeal to both young and old readers. I hope you enjoy it.
