Is It Wise?

by BeasPeas

'More Opinions, Politics & Comments' ~ #20-401-B
Free speech challenges
Making prudent decisions
Should we? Is it wise?

If we poke a snake
knowing it will coil to strike
Should we? Is it wise?

Think how it riles us
to become hate-speak's target
Do we turn our cheek?

Why then is it wise
to print to antagonize?
Just because we can!

'More Opinions, Politics & Comments'

Please read my other poem entitled, "Eiffel Tower Went Dark," which encourages artists/writers to not be deterred by censorship. My POV, however, is different when it comes to self-censorship. Surely we don't want to shut down free speech, but viciousness unrestrained provokes, inflames, enrages. It's a dangerous game to play. Which groups are deemed to be "fair game" for ridicule--mine or yours? Are my politics correct, but yours are not? Is your religion/no religion true but mine is not? The point of my 5-7-5 x4 is to question OUR motives as creative people by asking--"How do I feel when hate is directed toward me/mine/ours?"
