Turtles Return

by Joan E.

armor with flippers
as old as dinosaurs
help hosts survival

counts and tags creatures
converts economy

green sea turtles
repeat life cycle at coast
amphibians prevail

moms struggle through sand
to lay five-score golf-ball eggs
re-catch waves solo

visitors are thrilled
and swimming shells thrive
Tortuguero wins

The species was on the decline when scientist Arthur Carr started his campaign to save it in 1959 on Costa Rica's shores. The successful work continues today at the Biological Station in Tortuguero with the support of many donors and volunteers as well as researchers. Eco-tourism is now the main industry in this beach area. We did not see mating in the ocean as the photo depicts, but we were fortunate to watch two of the huge, magnificent creatures perpetuate their kind in the sand and drag themselves back to the sea, exhausted.
