Something's Amiss

~Something's Amiss~

We all knew the world would end one day,

but we'd never thought of this...

morning dawned bright one warm Sunday

yet, I knew something was amiss.

Certainly, Alfred Hitchcock had it right

for the skies were black as coal.

The horizon swarmed like writhing night.

Ignoring the shuddering of my soul...

I walked out into the teeming mass,

cacophonies of beating wing flaps sang.

A lullaby sweet, so darkly vast

when, on a pale hued horse, he came—

I watched in horror, somehow I knew,

yet, I could but scarcely breathe.

His robe— an ebony black; it flew,

as I stared on in disbelief.

Trailing him — scores of onyx clad birds,

tar dipped feathers of ghastly black.

'Twas then I felt, rather than heard –

Mankind is never coming back...

I awoke then, bathed in beads of sweat —

jumped up, then rushed to look outside,

a dove perched above my porches steps

stared at me coldly — whilst I cried.

This poem is based on a dream I'd had, early Sunday morning. I awoke in a panic at 3:43 am. I immediately got out my notepad and began jotting down the bits and pieces of the dream that were the most vivid. The white dove above my porch, me crying as it looked on with a cold glassy stare -- as if it were a stuffed bird, not a living one -- the massive swarms of birds which blackened the normally sunny skies...

I asked my pastor on Sunday morning what it could have meant, but I prefer to keep his answers to myself, as he was unsure.

If anyone has any ideas, or is adept at dream interpretation, by all means, let me know what you might think it to mean. It has really been on my mind a great deal since it happened.

Thanks for reading, and as always...'Pleasant Screams'...
