Fairy Magic

by Cindy Warren

Friendly little flower fairy,
What awesome power do you carry?
Your magic makes the buds unfurl,
Makes more appear in a tight little curl.
At night you sleep in the snapdragon flower,
In morning inspect the sunflower's tower.
Drinking the dew that shines like a gem,
In sparkles all up and down the stem.
You guard the pansies as they grow,
Rejoice now as the ladyslippers show.
You sing to the ladybugs and they appear,
To feast on the aphids who may cause fear
To the tender new shoots you hold so dear.
It's a song so lovely the bees draw near
And pollinate the blossoms for the next year.

Lovely little mushroom fairy,
What awesome power you must carry.
Overnight from the ground your charges spring,
Food or death they might bring.
You sing to the birds so they will know,
This one is food, and that one, no!
For the leprechauns you shine your light
As they choose the best for their party tonight.
More spring up from the soil
For the little folk to roast or boil.
Your lute plays a tune to the woodland elf
So he knows which ones to keep for himself.
He knows which ones to hide and hold
For spells against enemies bold.

Feisty little forest fairy,
Such awesome power you need to carry.
Mighty trees your charges are,
Spreading acorns and pinecones near and far.
Tonight your family will all be found
Dancing on the fairy mound.
Drawing little folk from all around.
When tiny boots begin to pound
Around the mound on the ground,
Magic vapors begin to swirl
As the dancers jump and twirl.
Fairies catch the magic mists
Firmly held in tiny fists,
Carefully saved against the hour
They might need their fearsome power.

Wandering little water fairy,
What wonderful power you can carry.
Splashing in the shallow stream
In sunlight while the owls still dream.
Singing a song to the little fish
Who gather round to make a wish.
Bugs are beguiled by the fairy's will,
Wishes come true and bellies fill.
Flies buzz down near a log,
A lovely lunch for a little frog.
She sends her love to all her friends,
Ducks who nest where the water bends.
When the night begins to fall,
She sends out a lovely call.
Magic pours into her little stick,
She saves it all up for a direful trick.

Things aren't right on this awful morning,
Creatures all send fearful warning.
Stream, forest and meadow cry out in fright,
What's come upon us in the night?
At our home is being hurled
Terror from beyond our world.
Trees yesterday tall and filled with joys
Are falling with an awful noise.
Fairies all must stand and fight,
It's up to them to make things right.
Fairies gather with their different features
To rid their world of awful creatures
With teeth of steel and bellies of fire,
Belching smoke as foul as their intentions dire.
Icy mist surrounds the dreadful beasts,
Makes them pause from their frightful feasts.
The mist becomes as black as night,
The invaders now have no sight.
Fairies creep in under cover of mist,
Unleashing their magic till nothing is missed.
Intruders die with the strangest of pings and pops,
With their fires snuffed out the belching stops.
The fairies sing with all their might
So their friends can forget the terrible sight.
The folk dance home with delight
Because the fairies always make things right.
