Whimsical Wildlife

by Joan E.

lion lazes
on acacia limb
baboon for lunch

white-bellied upright
brown-backed browser gallops
gerenuk shifts shape

observe camouflaged
genet cat and gerenuk
'til cheetahs hunger

male impalas
polish horns on brush
impress ladies

hippos submerge
seek seven-minute

fish eagle
swoops from flat-top trees
lake-lunch served

hydrax hides
but is no match for
Masai's camera

why did the gnarled gnu
cross Ngorongoro Crater
--to cut the new grass

monkeys open
multiple doors and drawers
before slingshot sounds

kites and guinea hens
vie for tourists' lunch
fowl winners

giraffe bids farewell
lions copulate in road
baboons' young frolic

Poem of the Month contest entry

Please forgive the number of senryu--I eliminated as many "snapshots" as I could in this final photo album from my recent trip to East Africa! The gerenuk is a type of antelope that can stand on its hind legs to reach its favorite trees' leaves, exposing its white belly.

I hope you enjoy one of my favorite photos from my travels--the Rothschild giraffe that has made a comeback.
