A Mourning Dove serenades me every morning.

The Raven and the Dove

by nancy_e_davis

A traditional sonnet
The Raven and The Dove

Edgar Allen had his Raven, but I was sent a Dove.
His Raven brought him misery, but my bird brings me love.
I pity Edgar Allen, for his bird said "Nevermore".
While my bird say's "I love you" and he says it o'er and o'er.
~~*~~
A pretty dove who wakes me with "I love you" every morn.
and though love is the message, still it seems to sound forlorn.
For even though I'm haunted, even though I'm feeling blue,
I tell myself each morning, that the message is from you.
~~*~~
To think that once I thought his name was morning dove, that's true!
But now I know it's mourning dove, that's why he sounds so blue.
He's speaking to his lost love, his tender heart is broken.
He cries and cries, so afraid goodby's will go unspoken.
~~*~~
Edgar wrote about his Raven, I write about my Dove.
His raven brought him misery, my dove has brought me love......
