Offical opening of the bridge thwarted.
Sydney Harbour Bridge
by Aussie
Newly married; beautiful woman, handsome man
These two lovers crossed the span Side by side amongst the throng Singing our anthem - loud and strong. Suddenly the band ceased to play Lang to open the bridge that day Clatter of hooves, swipe of sabre De Groote quickly fell out of favor Toppled roughly from his horse Police took him by brute force Taken away - booed by some Ribbon cut - deed were done. New ribbon quickly hung in wonder Too late! De Groote had stolen Lang's thunder Finally the newlyweds found welcome shade Picnic under the bridge, checked blanket they laid. Special people they will always be Long crossed over, both now free Dad made a pendant from bridge stone Speckled granite and silver - mine to own. |

Rhyming quatrain: March 1932 - Sydney Harbour Bridge was to be officially opened by the then Labor Premier of N.S.W. Francis De Groote rode through the crowd and cut the ribbon with his sabre. Many did not like the Premier and cheered the horseman on. On that day my parents crossed the bridge with thousands of other Australians. Dad made a pendant from the granite of the bridge and I still treasure his love for my mother.
