Whispers to a child Contest Winner
Hey you. We've been given this magic little moment in time to talk and I've got some stuff to say to you that I want you to really listen to. You see I'm you but, the older version when life is getting close to being the sunset years for us. You are me but, before we know anything so listen up sweetie; this is important.
Baby, you are going to have to guard your goodness. Believe what people are showing you because eventually people will show you their true colors. When that happens, you have to believe them. Most will not understand the gift that you give to them by loving so unconditionally. It leads to many painful memories because it will be hard to understand why some people need to leach the goodness from you. But, they will and it hurts no matter the age.
You will always prefer the company of boys to girls. It won't be until much later when you appreciate the feminine aspect of your personality. Don't believe that you are not special. You are and you can achieve great things with your life if you always remain true to your inner child.
It's okay to be you in everything. That is one of the most important things I can tell you. Just be you. Love the way you do; fully, completely without reservations. The right people will outnumber the bad ones. Bad people will not understand who you are and will try their gut level best to destroy your innocence, but stay strong. It will be nearly impossible to beat you down or take away your faith but, it wont' stop the pain or the disillusionment.
Don't let mom and dad make you feel insignificant and push a little harder, say it a little louder and longer when it comes time for our parents to decide about the dance thing. You will never stop loving music or dance and you need to push harder about the ballerina thing. You will make a stupendous dancer and it will avert a disease that will happen to you later on. So push hard, and make mom and dad understand how important this is to you.
Our time is getting closer to being gone now honey and I need to tell you about things that are going to change you irreversibly. These won't be pleasant and you may not fully understand yet but, you will so listen carefully now!
I want to tell you to about the men in your life. They don't all come at you in the middle of the night with lecherous intent. Not all will steal your innocence or make you afraid of the dark. Most will be wicked great fun and one will eventually be just right.
The ones who will steal innocence will come from directions that you don't expect. Just when you are enjoying a hot summer day, the first one will come. It will be family and even though you will not be physically hurt, you will not come away unscathed.
Family will become just a word and this rotting obsession for you will be played out many more times. Mom will never believe you and dad will just wish it was him. On that hot summer's day and you'll know the one when it happens, just don't take a nap. Do not go into the coolness of that house to lie down and sleep. When you wake up you will discover life has changed.
Your battle with addictions also begin here. Your compulsion to make yourself unloved and ugly will be a lifelong battle. Don't let it happen sweetheart. Stay strong and know it's totally alright to say NO!
Faith will be sorely tested over the years but, I promise you that faith will never be compromised. God will always be a part of who you are and you will defend your right to believe and trust until the very end of your life. Faith will guide you and in every aspect of this life, God will abide even when things seem unresolveable.
When you meet Michael in the seventh grade, he will be an important man to you. You will love him first as your sweetheart and then as your friend. He will remain the most important person from your youth. Never forget that or take that friendship for granted.
Later in your life you will be approached about playing football. Don't do it! You will be set up for some of the most horrendous experiences during this time. Don't live with Marcia, she will sell you at gunpoint and you will reach an irreversible decision at the point of that gun...
Finish your education, save your money, say no to addictions and get involved with your own life. Don't look for the easy less painful ways to face your trials. Meet them head on, looking things right in the eye. Know who you are and accept that no matter what the adversity you will be able to perservere.

"The ONE" will arrive in your life when you least expect it, and will be the love of your life for at least the next 30 years. You will have children and you will be able to protect your children from the ugliness life dishes out.
I can feel the pull to go back to my time but, here's one last thing you have to know. Always trust your heart. Don't try to be someone whom you are not. Don't try to impress people or beg for their friendships.
You are so worthy of all those that you admire and they are the lucky ones to have a place in your heart. You will help many in your lifetime and eventually you will know what happiness looks like. Watch for it, cause it's out there and looking for you!
