Free verse seasonal contest entry
Sole Conveyance
by Fleedleflump
In bleak and driving chills of goosebumps raised upon my heart, that icy tone that you intone unmakes the walls and sets the stones of ice within my hearth. To find my way, the black upon the grey, seems harder than intent, that need to vent denied. The shadow beast unleashed by scorn devours the hours as minutes, leaving days and acres stretching out 'cross Winter's pale expanse, my thoughts and dreams but skeletal reminders of the trees. It's then, when buffeted and scalded by cold's bite, I find that cave within chagrin and lock myself away. A spark of self indulgent wit becomes determined lines defining what I want to be, a burgeoning, aspiring flame is poetry, the freedom wrought in me. And suddenly the blankets wrap around my ailing form, the cave illuminated is a haven from the storm, and words are my salvation, vindication, and my soul, conveying me in warmth to Spring-born smiles. |

We all have our own ways of dealing with stress, contention, and depression. Sometimes, I just need to be alone. It's then, wrapped up in self-pity and self-imposed isolation (usually with the slim company of my computer in a dark room), that the words come to rescue me with all the thoughts of how things should and will be again.
Thank you Sue (sgalletti) for conjuring this thought-provoking contest prompt. I chose number 3 (Winter Chills) from the following contest guidelines:
Select one or more of the following prompts to write a poem and metaphor that shares a piece of your life. Any form of poetry and length allowed. Poems will not be blind because the purpose is to learn more about you, through the seasons....
1. Summertime Shines: Which person in your life brings you the greatest joy through warmth, like the pleasurable rays of the sun beating down, causing you to bask in their warming glow?
2. Autumn Leaves Fall: What event in your life was a turning point leading from warm sunny days to a realization that leaves change colors, flowers die and life goes dormant until spring arrives again?
3. Winter Chills: What do you do to ward off the chills of a cold winter day? How do you create optimism in your life when it seems that everything around you is bleak?
4. Spring Renews: Describe a situation where your life was renewed through the introduction of a person or event that caused you to bloom again with renewed energy, bursting through the soil of the earth.
5. Holidays: As you reflect on the different seasons and holidays, which holiday best describes you and why?
I hope you enjoyed the read.
