Good Riddance To Narco Ballads

by Joan E.

My curses to boss "Crutches"
And compadre "El Teo"
I say down with la mana
Narcos will lose manana

Viva la tranquilidad

Stick with the corrido songs
Accordion-laced ballads
Popular catchy dance tunes
Tracing long-lost love in ruins

Forget the outlaw image
And the shout-outs to mob crime
Drug-traffickers glorified
Wrong role models sanctified

Viva la tranquilidad

Mas bravo de los bravos
Does not belong to killers
Or low knavish kidnappers
And pathetic pillagers

Muckraker with grand guitar
Should strum a worthy subject
Let melodies float with song
From crowd's crooning sing-along

Viva la tranquilidad

I am reacting to learning about the Tijuana, Mexico police ban of one of the more outrageous groups after it shouted greetings to drug bosses "Muletas"/"Crutches" and "El Teo" and sang tributes to their power. "La mana" is the mob (literally the trick or evil deed) and "manana," tomorrow. "Corrido" means special rhythm and "el mas bravo de los bravos" is a song title that translates to "the most brave/fierce of the brave/fierce." I retorted with "Long live tranquility" to their "Mob rules."

Celia Claase decribes her colorful artwork as "rainbow nation in fear of criminals"--now, there's an apt reaction!
