A short free verse poem.

A Single, Tattered Rose

Once an American beauty 
life has beaten her down.
 
She was a budding flower 
when she met the man of her dreams,
but due to unexpected storms,
in time he had become a thorn.
 
Forced to raise the children alone 
her appearance is somewhat ragged,
yet despite the pain she's endured 
some comeliness remains,
even if it is in the form 
of a single, tattered rose.
