The Midday Hour

by Jessica Wheeler

Like clockwork, they rebel
beneath the midday glare.
That's when I catch
them dancing
by my window.

Watching as they're prancing,
frolicking about,
snatching my attention,
just to hurl it
like a wonder ball.

And round and round it goes,
quickly passed and bound.
Caught by what I couldn't catch;
tossed between lost dreams
and wishes missed.

Their drop by, I await,
a calculated chaos,
to ridicule and mock
their mundane maker:
Ordinary me.

For I
was once as free,
unbridled, unrestrained,
weaving webs of wild wishes,
dreaming them to life.

But now
I watch their madness
beneath a bitter midday sun,
parading so-called freedom
I've abandoned.

I give my focus freely,
tolerate their taunts.
For their temporary visit
is as brief
as its temptation.

They'll dance until they drop
back down the rabbit hole,
and I'm content
to watch them fall
from my side of the window.

It often takes time for us to truly value the contentment in our existing lives. To daydream about past aspirations or fleeting thrills is common. But real freedom lies in the realization that we are likely better off having let go of certain fantasies. True happiness is worth the time it takes to grow. And if the grass looks greener, it's probably fake.
Just saying.
