Pulling Away

by Bill Schott

We were once a big part of their growing hearts,

present at each new event;

a part of their lives, until life turned our eyes

to health woes we could not prevent.

Now the laptop readings and midday feedings,

have moved, with their interests, away;

though a phonecall apart, we are out of their hearts,

uninvolved in their actions each day.

So this is the break, when we miss birthday cake,

and young lives carry on without us;

since our CAN'Ts best our CANS, we become also-rans,

unnoticed and gathering dust.
