Loosing An Old Friend

by Dean Elliott

Loosing An Old Friend
A big, fat monster, oozing slime, once ate up a friend of mine.
He was careless and he dropped his guard, while we were playing in the yard.
We beat the monster with a stick 'til he spit him out when it got sick.
He threw away the clothes he wore and told us all that he was sore,
but soon we all were back at play, just like any other day.
Things were fine about a week and then my friend began to squeak.
It got so bad we couldn't play, we couldn't hear a thing he'd say.
He had a doctor take a peek to see what gave my friend his squeak.
He thought about it long and hard and finally rubbed him down with lard.
It sounded weird but did the trick, I'll have to say it turned out slick.
You couldn't catch him with the ball unless, by chance, he'd slip and fall.
We all grew up, he moved away, I saw him again the other day.
We tried to talk, he didn't stay, I guess old friends just slip away.
