Loneliness in free verse

Jumping Ship

by Jessica Wheeler

I am but a lonely shadow,
Flitting across the moonlit sea.
Wandering waves, roaming their ripples,
In search of my next ship to board.

Steered by starlight
to new horizons,
Yet never to the harbor of home.
Constellations of my own design.

A paradox, in my urge for flight.
I yearn for the ties severed by my departure.
With each anchored vessel and fleeting bond formed,
The gap I seek to bridge, widens.

This endless quest for more finds less and less.
The final ship will
sail into the night, and out of reach.
Leaving my last jump to land in the dark, deep, blue.

Where I shall sink, anchored at last, to loneliness.
