The tallest tree gathers the latest snowfall

Isolation in Winter

by J'nea D'on

White crystals sparkle
atop the evergreen that
stands above them all.

Haiku Poetry Contest contest entry

This poem serves multiple meanings. With the title, it leaves the reader with the surface meaning from the mental image of the tallest tree gathering snow as it protects the other trees from the white powder. On a deeper level, one might perceive a person offering protection to others; or perhaps someone who carries the burden alone. In its simplicity, the reader sees the tree and knows it is wintertime. However, metaphorically speaking, isolation may cause the coldness of winter at any time.
