Connections

by Navada

Eros

we burn with passion and desire

strike a match and watch us spontaneously combust

there are dangerous undercurrents

swirling deep beneath the civilised masks we wear

flames lick at our legs as we entwine

physical connection beyond our wildest dreams

Philia

we bond in brotherly comradeship

crouching back to back on the battlefield

ready to shield, protect and defend

platonic devotion for our fellow man

loyal comrades, trusted relatives, dear friends

sharing a true spiritual connection

Ludus

we play and tease and flirt

engaging in friendly banter with fellow adventurers

roaring together in joyful laughter

dancing together with energetic abandon

kindling burgeoning flames of attraction

relishing a joyful spark of connection

Agape

we blend in universal harmony

displaying loving kindness

developing empathy for strangers

reaching out in charity

caring for others beyond ourselves

attaining fulfillment through charitable connection

Pragma

we stand together in maturity

demonstrating patience and tolerance

engaging in mutual compromise

staying in love for the long run

exercising lifelong commitment

enjoying the fruits of lasting, long-standing connection

Philautia

we are filled with self-love

that progresses beyond mere narcissism

into a realm of healthy self-respect

and building capacity for loving others

this is the origins of philanthropy

the ultimate loving connection with all mankind

What Is Love Poetry contest entry

Too often, our society seems obsessed with romantic love. There is so much more. Different commentators argue that the ancient Greeks had six, or seven, or eight, different words to define the different shades of meaning love can have. I've opted to explore six.

Here are some of the sources I read while preparing this piece:
