A social grace too important to lose

An Ode to Thank-You Notes

by Rachelle Allen

Since childhood, it was de rigeur,
     before a gift was used
to sit and write a thank-you note
     with loving words infused.

Inspired by someone's thoughtfulness,
a note of thanks would say,
"You have been so sweet to me!"
and "You have made my day."

The faster it was mailed right out,
     the truer seemed each word.
     Enthusiasm reigned supreme.
     The 'thanks' was loudly heard.

Today, this practice is rebuffed.
     It's labeled 'obsolete.'
Group thank-you texts are now in vogue.
     The social media tweet.

Oh, how I miss sweet thank-you notes!
     Appreciation's mark.
Two tiny words, when sent by mail,
make life seem much less stark.

My mission is to instigate
     a thank-you note revival.
There's nothing I would rather see
     than social grace survival.

Ode Poem writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write an ode to anything you want as long as it is not about a person or an animal. Comparison can be made to people or animals. It can be funny or serious. Personification allowed. Rhyming or not is up to you. The subject is up to you, please keep it clean. Pictures and author's notes allowed.

The final straw for me came last spring after we attended the wedding of one of our colleagues...and three days later received a computer-generated FORM LETTER THANK-YOU that began, "Dear Friends and Family Who Attended Our Wedding." I'm serious. How has basic courtesy sunk to SUCH a low??

This is second only to the "new rule" that brides have 'up to a year' to send a thank-you note. Like, WHAT??! Absolutely appalling. How totally cavalier and ungrateful! The rule in our house was always, "You don't get to use it until you've sent your thank-you note."

So, please join my crusade. Let's make thank-you notes an important aspect in our lives again. Recognizing and appreciating kindnesses will make life better!
