A Chapbook Challenge

by Ginda Simpson

This challenge was merely a pitch
to lure poets into their ditch
They wanted to grow
their business and so
They came up with a plan that was rich.

Let's offer a chapbook challenge they schemed
to poets who will write and will dream
but presentations were poor
the prompts a real bore
but print orders were the goal, it seemed.

The challenge misleading, I now know it
in favor of printer not poet
So my poems I will keep
and not take the leap
but wait for a press who won't blow it.

Stacked Limerick contest entry

I once entered an online challenge to write a chapbook. I was new to the idea and a bit naive. I learned at the end that the goal was little more than a means to advertise their printing business. Full disclosure up front would have been appreciated.
