A Wanderlust in Me

by Tom Horonzy

I often wonder
If the desire to rove
is an inbred trait
to where I haven't been?

I trekked across America,
amazed by grandstanding canyons
and wide rivers, none broader than
the Big Muddy at New Orleans.

On Alaskan creeks dense with salmon,
I crossed upon the backs of fish,
battling bears, falls, and high-speed rapids
to end up dying where their lives began.

I've taken leave on Honshu Island,
rode the bullet train to old Kyoto
where temples built centuries before
served as Japan's capital before Tokyo.

Rome wasn't built in a day they say
and I confirmed by visually inspecting
the remains in place, that it's true,
and it's in better shape than Pompei.

Cruising the Med and the Caribbean
I have seen fish colored by rainbows
through crystalline waters strikingly clear,
strengthening my faith that God lives!

And what remains on my bucket list?
The Land Down Under would be a start
as well as viewing the Aurora australis
and a colony of penguins in Antarctica.
