To make others aware of the sacrifice first responders take

Unrecognized Sacrifice

by Melissa Speck

The tones drop and with a leap his bed
He leaves his family behind with a single kiss

With lights and sirens, to his calling he heads
The fear in his eyes, he's quick to dismiss

With gear donned and brothers beside
He rides blindly to the smoke up ahead

Not knowing his fate or what he will find
His main defense, the hose in the engine's bed

Adrenaline pumping, he crawls towards the fire
As his life is put on the line

He pushes thru the smoke as the flames grow higher
Driving all fear to the back of his mind

His only lifeline hangs heavy on his back
Giving just minutes of air to be received

Bravery and courage are traits he never lacks
For every day, he faces his own mortality

When the dust settles and the smoke is cleared
He returns to his daily life

What he strives for most is what we all fear
But it's the community he serves that gives him most pride

So, when you see that truck with its sirens wailing
Say a quick "Thank You"

For you never know what story it's telling
And if that hero inside will, one day, save you.
