Tonight

by LisaMay

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.

My tears flow wet upon my cheek;
I see his grief, I cannot speak.
A father cries, his fam’ly dead
from Russian bombs; their blood runs red.

I sit in comfort, home intact,
watching while their city is sacked.
More shells rain down with death’s sad fate —
what will this gain ’cept fear and hate?

I’m safe at home; I am well fed;
and I don’t have my loved ones dead.
I feel the fear, I feel the hate,
’though I just watch the news, on late.

Tonight I feel deep Ukraine-pain —
will fight for freedom be in vain?
It is so wrong to inflict harm,
all due to Putin’s harsh strong-arm.

We in the west, we live so free.
Do we assume it’ll always be?
Hand on my heart, I’d fight for this.
When freedom’s lost, it’s the abyss.

If enemy is at the gate,
I’ll forget love, and embrace hate.
I’ll hate myself, it’s true, also.
I’ll hate war more — but death to foe!

Author Note:
I thought I was a committed pacifist, but while watching the news tonight and seeing the injustice and harm being done to innocent victims in Ukraine, I felt a connection and realised I would take up arms to defend freedom.
