First Month's Rent...Free!

by Boogienights

It wasn't the creaks or groaning sounds,
that had caused Samantha to worry.
Old houses like this one often settled,
and the resident rats, they would scurry.

It wasn't anything she could see,
that caused her to be ill at ease.
But there was a heaviness in the air
and an ill wind that blew through the trees.

She'd just moved in, unpacked all her things,
she was happy to be on her own.
For the very first time, she felt so free,
in this house made of timber and stone.

The landlord had failed to tell her,
of the tragedy that once occurred
In that house, many years ago though,
perhaps a story he never heard.

A hundred years ago, more or less,
those who lived there had tragically died.
Murder, though who did it no one knew,
never solved, though detectives had tried.

A mother and father, three children,
one night viciously stabbed while asleep.
The house stayed empty after that night,
far away from it people would keep.

Samantha knew nothing about it,
the rent was low, it was what she could pay.
She thought herself lucky to find it,
as her friends helped her move one spring day.

The first week passed by, it was lovely,
but the next week she felt the first change.
A feeling of sadness disturbed her,
at first happy, to her, this felt strange.

One night, a hundred years to the day,
that the family of five met their end.
A girl stood at the foot of her bed,
a message is what she had to send.

"You shouldn't be here, you don't belong,
what you did was beyond the pale."
"This is our house, so leave us alone!",
What was heard next, a pitiful wail.

It was just a dream she thought, and yet...
as she looked through the doorway she saw
five figures pass by down the hallway,
it both scared her and left her in awe.

She had no money, and couldn't leave,
six months' rent she had paid at the start.
So, she did research and what she found,
caused both sadness and fear in her heart.

The spirits then told her, they'd never rest,
'til the one who had killed them was found.
Or until they were freed from the house where trapped,
and implored her to burn it all down.

With matches and gasoline in hand,
as if in a deep trance, she complied.
Then ran to the door but found it locked,
in her own flames, Samantha then died.

Firemen came just in time to save,
the old house, though it needed a fix.
It's sad to say the ghosts who lived there,
only five once, now they numbered six.

This gentle woman had lived before,
a hundred years ago, more or less.
As a man, a killer, with no remorse,
victims found retribution I guess.

The house now sits empty and silent,
but it's up for rent once more, I hear.
Perhaps, if you're looking for low rent...
Heat is paid and it comes with free fear.
