Could the year ahead be the worst one yet?

Two Thousand Twenty-two

by BethShelby

Strains of Auld Lang Syne still sounded,
as I found myself surrounded
with dire thoughts of what the New Year might impart.
I’ll admit I was astounded
by a fear, I hoped, unfounded
that the year ahead might have a gloomy start.
News reports are so depressing.
Dare I hope we're not regressing
to the point of acquiescing
to a future that has known no counterpart?

I'm trying to ignore the news and hope for brighter future. We can't allow ourselves to settle for the idea that each year will be worse than the year before.
