Khulamani Sisterhood

Speak Out

by Rdfrdmom2

A Khulamani sisterhood
no one seeks membership
for to do so would mean acceptance
of an event or events
that,
through no fault of her own,
placed her in the isolation of victimhood
no one else could possibly understand –
dreams tattered
emotions frozen
eyes glazed
heart shattered
self-worth lost
voice removed
nothing matters
while living in a society
that most often blames the victim
for being alone in that place
for wearing those clothes
choosing those friends
staying out until that time of night
keeping all the shame,
owning all the blame
none of which is hers to hold
for she did nothing wrong

Often years and years pass
as her tears quietly spill
asking herself the most dangerous question:
Why?

There are no answers
no one deserves this
unbearable chain of pain
which seems unbreakable
until that day
she is invited to a safe place
surrounded by others
who will know her pain
on the same journey of healing
each at different levels
a teacher and some coaches
who have filled most of
the chinks in their armor,
have already found their voices,
speaking truths to those invited
to join this Khulamani sisterhood
at a retreat, where she, too,
can find her voice
learn to
“Khulamani”: Speak Out –
to begin her lifelong pursuit of healing
where she can recoup what's been lost
replace the lies of society
with the truths of the Lord
learn to see herself as her Savior does
and to one day reach out to others
to help free them
from their self-imposed prisons
of victimhood

Khulamani
Speak Out

I helped design the curriculum for the H-E-AR-T V2V (Victim-2-Victim) Retreats. Everyone on the committee had either experienced a sexual assault/rape personally or had a family member who had. I also have had the privilege of being a co-teacher and/or a coach at three of the retreats, including the first two. It is, at once, the most rewarding and the most exhausting work I have ever done. We have developed a Khulamani Sisterhood over the years. Even if we hadn't met before, once we get the chance to do so, the bond is immediate. We were doing this long before the "Me, Too" movement, which I applaud. All of us are needed to increase awareness of this issue - the only thing needed for a person to be raped is for a rapist to be present - there are no other mitigating factors. Thank you for reading. A special thanks to Renate-Bertodi for the use of "seeing our truth." It is essential for victims to see their truth so they can begin their journey of healing.
