Her name was Helen.
But I would call her "Helen of Troy"
Because to me?
She was truly a Goddess?
(You sea?)
...
We first met by chance at a naval dance in Philly.
Yes and me?
Chief Petty Officer Robert Edward Woods.
I would be doing a tour of duty for 26 years on four Naval destroyers.
The Wasp, the Hornet, the Fulton, and finally the Arizona.
And, she was watching me watching me!
...
Yes!
My God is my Helen of Troy!
As I was dancing with a wave.
Round, and Round and Round again!
But the wave was just a friend and soon that dance would end.
...
Yes, but as for she?
To me she was more pretty.
Yes, more pretty than any Azure-Blue sea!
Pretty with her hair all curled in
"Dipsy Doo!"
Her Maybelline lips parted.
Want more could a sailor boy do?
And, with each and every spin?
Perhaps a Sin?
And, with each and every word?
(Haven't you heard?)
I was becoming Heart-Broken!
Just her shipboard token!
...
But was this real?
Or was she just a Siren and in disguise?
As I look deeply into her Beautiful...
Greenish-Blue eyes!
And, with each and every look?
That I could Sea?
I began thinking.
My ship is sinking!
(Lord God above save me?)
...
And, she smelled like Springtime, wearing her Chanel Number Five!
(Man Alive!)
She introduced herself as Helen and asked for a dance.
And I thought to myself?
Should I take the risk and chance?
But Her welcoming embrace?
That look on her face?
Yes, was a taste of chance?
That I had long dreamed of this
"Real Romance!"
...
But, before I knew it?
Yes, I was falling ever so quickly!
Yes, "Falling like a Ton of Bricks!"
But was she full of tricks?
I thought.
As she winked at me with each and every spin!
Perhaps I was just a foolish sailor and this was just a "Nightmarish Sin?"
But she cleaned my clock and it was "Hickory, Dickory, Dock!"
...
Yes it all started first in Philly.
(That Day of Night)
But then it continued from Philly to Newport, Rhode Island?
And, Newport to New London Connecticut?
And finally?
New London to Long Beach California!
...
And yes!
We had four sons and who could ask for anything more?
But as for me back then?
Yes, my deal was War!
First the Korean War.
(The Cold War)
And then?
World War II.
Them Japs never had a chance!
Nor could any of them dance!
And, I would not retire until 1958!
With the onsite set of Vietnam?
(That was not very great!)
To be Continued.
24.
