Between 100 and 150 words story contest entry
Was It Fate

While in Iraq, my squad was ambushed and every member except
Private Williams and I were killed. We had bags pulled over our
heads, hands tied and brutally shoved into a van, then hauled off
to God knows where.
When we stopped, they dragged us out, put us on our knees and
removed the hoods. We were in front of two recording cameras.
Their leader shoved a paper in Williams' hand and told him to read it.
He refused.
I watched Williams die right there in the desert sand. He put
the paper in my hand and, too, demanded that I read it aloud.
Fearing for my own fate, I did as was told. My voice shook,
"Seduce the heart of the devil with pirate art."
Then he faced me and said, "There, now your entry adheres to rules
and you know everyone was looking for those stupid words."
