Fill her up mate!

Good ol' Days

by Aussie

Drove into the servo only to wait
Out came a grease- monkey
What can I do for ya?
Wiping his hands, smiling

Fill her up mate, in a hurry
On my way to Cloncurry
You'll need more than a tank
Long way out west for a curry

The bowsers were rusted
Paint flaking, sign gone
The grease- monkey turned
The petrol bowser on

You be driving' a gas guzzler mate
Big ol' Ford with NT plate
Going home to Cloncurry
Cattle to feed, maybe a date

Smell of petrol assaulting my eyes
Even walked away from the tears
Clean your windscreen?
Fill those big tyres?

Nah, she'll be sweet
Thanks for ya help
Here, have a treat
Bottle of coke and ten bob

Australian English and grammar: Back in the old days there were grease-monkeys to fill your tank, clean the windscreen and pump up tyres. Today we just tap a card. So sad DIY service and no conversation.
Cloncurry is out west, cattle country. NT means Northern Territory, Ten bob was ten shillings to fill a big petrol tank (we don't call it gas)
