A moment in time can change it all -
He Touched Us All
by Begin Again
A child’s life jacket lay in the sand. The terrified mom watched as we entered the water, forming a human chain. Solemnly, we walked forward, each dreading their next step.
My boots slipped on the sandy bottom. I prayed I was wrong. Nodding to the Sheriff, I lifted his lifeless body into my arms. I couldn’t stop my tears; he looked so peaceful.
Nothing would erase her torturous screams from my mind.
His death, a living nightmare, bonded our lives forever.

I've listed this as flash fiction because it is written from the volunteer's point of view. Unfortunately, I never spoke with him, but this is what I imagine he felt and will always feel. He is a hero in my mind, and I wished I'd been able to thank him.
