During the drought, writing about my hopes and fears

Farmers Prayer

by brianrm2358

There is a storm in the western sky tonight,
Rumblin' and a splashing rain.
But the whippoorwill's call,
And the hoot owls might,
Be singing of my doubt and pain.

But its been so long,
And its been so dry,
And the wind blows so hard sometimes,
Blowin' all my dreams away.

If prayers rise so high,
Past the stars shining bright,
To make things green again,
Send an answer here tonight.

I'd like to feel the way I did,
When I could work past any drought,
When my back was straight and my fear was hid,
And I laughed at luck and doubt.

But its been so long,
And its been so dry,
And the wind blows so hard sometimes,
Blowin' all those dreams away.

The kids asleep in the old farmhouse,
Just me and the cattle see,
That storm a lashing out,
Bringing cool belief to me.

And down along the creek tonight,
When the breeze is still,
I swear I heard an answer there
In the song of the whippoorwill

A poem I wrote back a long time ago. When I was struggling to make it on my old farm. I realized back then that the greatest gift of my spiritual connection to the land was to view it and listen to it during all times of the day and night. What phase the moon was in, what direction the wind was coming from, what animals were moving through along the creek bottom, and what they were saying. The stars let me know where I was in the universe and on my little farm. My theory is that once you know where you are, you can figure out who you are.
