For Goodness' Sake

by Y. M. Roger

Twist of wrist
or perhaps fate,
‘Tis chances missed
that make us wait,
A lover’s tryst
for lust to sate –
Whilst nothing’s left
for goodness’ sake…

Dark secrets kept
tend to frustrate,
For hearts have wept
enduring hate,
Without respect
souls suffocate –
Whilst nothing’s left
for goodness’ sake…

Yes, all around
our goals stagnate,
And though earthbound
we sit and wait,
For thoughts profound
in depth and weight –
Whilst nothing’s left
for goodness’ sake…

But here and now
let’s contemplate,
A heartfelt vow
to abrogate,
Sharp words afoul
that devastate –
Whilst nothing’s left…

For goodness’ sake!
