A Ring, A Figurine or a Shell

This is a contest for writers who like to get their teeth into a longer challenge. Let's have stories of between 5000 and 10000 words. Each story must include a ring, a figurine or a shell. You can use two or all three if you choose. The ring can be a piece of jewellery, or a phone sound, or... interpret as you wish. Ditto the figurine or shell.
