Losing a mother at age 7 had to be very hard. I lost my father at 5 1/2 but still had mom, thank God. A girl need a mother for advice and to answer questions that only another female can understand.

Hello and a happy Thursday to you Mary. Thank you for sharing your poem with us. It was so personal and sad. I've had a pretty rough life and I often wonder how different things could have been. Anyway have a great day.

I wonder how many other adults who lost parents when they were young have similar "What if" questions. Your poem gives us quite a bit of backstory about you, but perhaps you use the refrain too often.

When one loses a parent, they lose all of the possibilities. They lose the positive reassurances that a loving mom or dad will gladly give. The lose out on the loving smile that warms the heart to the core of one's being. They lose the vote of confidence when one needs it the most. When a young child loses a parent, they lose a vital piece of themselves and their possible future.

"What if", is an exceptionally well-written, and heart-wrenching piece. Penned with craft and skill, this talented poet has told it as it is. To me,
this is a six, but sadly I've run out of them. I look forward to seeing your next post.

Wow, a very powerful poem. This has everything necessary to be an effective conveyor of emotion. This is what poetry is about. Very well done. Thank you for sharing.

You have put a lot of energy and work into your poem. Your mother only lived for seven years, how sad for you. The repeated line seems unnecessary. 36 years certainly is too young for anyone.
I had a mother for 82 years before she succumbed to cancer. I don't think she wanted to go on anyway. Having her through my childhood was invaluable, but after that I was too independent to bother her.
I hope you are happy in your choices.

'I wonder if Ma had lived beyond my seven years...' What a great line for repetition. (You may not usually write poetry, but you did well on this one!)

I could see a young girl, sitting on the stairs-alone- in the hall, and thinking this out.

This work has reached the exceptional level

A very intriguing poem! Your sadness for what might have been shows clearly in your words. I'm so sorry that you lost your mother at such a young and tender age. It had to have been devastating!! I'm sure if Ma would have lived passed your seven years, there would have been hugs!!! I give you a six for the content of your poem and they way you presented it. The picture really brings your words to light. Don't stop writing! It's fun! It's theraputic! And you did pretty darn good on this one.

I wish my first poem looked this good. Maybe you should reconsider. Prose came first for me as well.

Excellent offering and the well-chosen illustration crowns your fine work.

I'm sorry your childhood was so traumatic, but I have found that writing about my childhood has brought me much healing. Keep at it.

Sending my best today as always, and blessings for your wedding endeavors,
Sally xo
