Wooow... so, Carole has a level head on her shoulders and Marilyn, well, she's definitely plugged into the party line and won't even have a reasonable discussion... :):) Oh too familiar these days - ugh!! :) And, once again, we see why I am NOT on social media!! ;) ;) Wonderful offering for the contest, my lady!! Yvette
*Sorry - still catchin' up but I'll be there before you know it (maybe even before I know it - lol!).

    C'mon, dear Yvette!
Join in on the insane fray of Facebook! Whoa! What a battlefield of keyboard crusaders!
I was on the receiving end of a political tirade = much like the one described here. But I like to think I possess a "level head on my shoulders" as opposed to a big head!
Thank you so much for the exceptional rating and lovely review!

This dialogue-only story, Majority's Rules, could be lifted right off a couple of friends Facebook posts today. The pandemic and the restrictions applied by our leaders are dividing people along these very issues. Nice job with this.

Hi Diane, I liked you dialogue only entry for the contest a lot. Now I'm not on facebook so can't say whether this kind of posting is common. I don't trust the site.
We are all free to have our opinions, but to doubt this virus is dangerous. We see it to our costs here in areas of Spain, where cases have soared again. This is far from over regardless of opinions.
Good luck, and stay safe. Ulla:)))

Super job on this, Diane. You have written something so real in terms of back and forth dialogue and at the same time invoked 'food for thought' with no need for more explanation. Bravo! Bless you and please be safe. : ) Bob

    Hello Bob!
First of all, I apologize for the lateness of my reply, but I do believe you will forgive me when I share with you that yesterday morning, 5 weeks before his due date, my first grandson arrived: Bowdie Tedham! I am officially a grandmother! (Applause! Applause!)
Mother and son are doing well; thank goodness!

So pleased you enjoyed my "Majority Rules!" A bit of an uncomfortable conversation. Just like everything else seems to be these days...

    Thank you again, Bob!

A very well-written dialogue only piece about the different opinions about the coronavirus and the way it is portrayed and used as a tool to provoke fear and place everyone in isolation fyi months, now we start to wonder why is protesting allowed , but going to church us not allowed? I ask myself what the hidden agenda is here?

I commend you for getting this dialogue out there for people to read. I actually do have a friend with whom I have an ongoing "dialogue" and our view all depends on which media outlet we are using as our source of whatever information they choose to present and what they choose to suppress. I guess they are exercising their "rights" to free speech as well? The world is crazy, but your dialogue offers a bit of sanity. This is excellent!

You are correct that this kind of dialogue occurs frequently these days, and you demonstrate it accurately in this post.

Regardless of the issue being debated, it is evident that (1) those claiming to be the majority feel justified in their attempts to suppress ALL viewpoints contrary to their own, and (2) they are becoming increasingly uncivil (to put it mildly) in that effort.

Though you kept this particular dialogue relatively civil, too often the self-designated majority representative, unable to refute the reasoning of the other, resorts to increasingly vile (and factually unjustified) name-calling, threats, and even actual attack of one kind or another, intended to intimidate the other into silence or even compliance. This certainly is a violation of the principle of free speech that formerly was universally accepted in the United States.

In reality, those claiming to be in the majority on a particular issue often are not; but their louder vocality makes them seem so, as the real majority may be harassed into silence.

The founders of our Republic realized that the "majority rule" in a true Democracy amounts to tyranny. That is why the Senate has two members from each state, regardless of population, to give all states equal status in that branch of Congress. The same principle applies to the Electoral College in choosing the President, lest large states dominate that process forever. It is noteworthy that our two major political parties are called Republicans (who tend to support the Constitution) and Democrats (who uniformly falsely refer to our nation as a Democracy and no longer support the Constitution except when convenient). The latter insist that they are the majority and thus entitled to be in control, while the truth is that they are not -- yet. We certainly will find out in the upcoming election, unless easily manipulated mail-in ballots and other fraud distorts the results.

You are commendable for entering this post in the Dialogue Only contest.

    Good Morning, Mike!
I am honored by your exceptional rating coupled with your thorough and thoughtful review.
I was on the receiving end of such a "friendly conversation" for posting an article on Facebook that most definitely went against the supposed majority's gratitude and adulation of Michigan's governor.
I was, and continue to be, appalled by the self-righteous stance that "friends" and former colleagues took against the contents of said article - which then devolved into an attack on my person.
I have left their vitriolic comments for all to see...

I always appreciate your insight, Mike.
    Stay safe and well.
    Thank you!

    You are most welcome, Diane.

From what you experienced, you can barely imagine the flak that Trump and those close to him have endured daily for four years so far. Either way, the hecklers are mindless ideologues.

Social media never attracted me. I realized immediately that they would tempt people to disclose private information both the government and crooks could not otherwise obtain so easily. I don't even visit any such sites. Meanwhile, the Leftists believe Twitter represents the thoughts of the majority of Americans, which simply is not true.

There are hecklers right here at FS too. Some of them live in other countries, where the only "news" they get is from the globalist-owned media; so they don't know their opinions are based on misinformation.

Accordingly, it was brave of you to post that dialogue.

By the way, here's a good example of majority rule in a true democracy. Imagine two wolves and a sheep voting over what to eat for dinner....

Oh, this dialogue is all to common ... but usually done on Facebook. I find people only listen for a few seconds and start forming their own "argument" and can barely wait to respond with "thier side" so butt right on in. It is rare to have someone sit back and listen to everything and then pause and respond with consideration - not to "win" but to clarify or ponder a different perspective - Sigh. A very real dialogue...

I have several challenges with this piece but my biggest one is a moral quandary.

"As for free speech, I see where you stand. It's only "free" if it conforms to the majority's narrative."

This struck a chord with me for several reasons. I disagree vehemently with this character but not for the same reasons as the antagonist in your story. First, this person has already placed themselves in their own mind as a martyr, by placing themselves in the 'minority'. It's me against the world. That's a dangerous place to start a conversation from because you're already on the defensive. Regardless of the overwhelming proof/evidence to the contrary of your belief, you will remain steadfast, seeking any inconsistency in the opposition whilst ignoring the flaws in your own argument under the perceived victimization of a majority rule.

This applies to all parties by the way, left and right. Then, your protagonist declares they are open to conversation, but on the premise that a) the person they're speaking/arguing/debating with not be allowed to change their mind and b) listening to theories that do not hold the same weight or value, whether you want to weight them morally and ethically or scientifically.

Regardless of my personal feelings, the piece itself is well done as it clearly made me think. Good luck in the contest and thanks for sharing. Later daze.

Hello Mrs. KT,
I pray you are well. Wow! It's hard to believe that these two people are still friends. But, God is forgiving, as well as we should be. I love this dialogue a lot!! It was so believable as I read it. Nicely done. This is so well presented in your story. Profanity usually comes out when you are mad. I do agree we all have opinions whether we agree with them or not. This is an excellent dialogue only writing contest. It kept my attention to the end. Best of luck in the contest.
