It's so sad that such a special tree was destroyed in the wars. That's such a beautiful, yet sad story. Wow, the connection they share is so special, I love it.

Yes, war destroys many beautiful things. Sadly, the mage trees no longer exist. The mage flute is all that is left.

established the connection with Melodica
and given us some insight into Piper's grandfather.
-I was glad to see him mentioned again; he
was such a kind, peaceful man that Piper loved deeply.
-The description of the whole scene as M.C. examines
the fife and begins to explain about it, and then Melodica
wanting to tell the story is so well written.
-Then, you top it off with Piper's magical, beautiful
playing that has Melodica and M.C. enthralled,
as well as Piper himself.
-He has never heard anything so beautiful,
and feels so connected to his grandfather.
-I loved this chapter; it will be interesting
to see where you take it from here.

Oh, you spoil me with all the kind comments, and the beautiful six stars. I love that you are so into the story that you are skeptical of some characters and happy to see others reappear. I love that you shortened Master Crescendo to MC. It fits so well. I got teary when I was writing this chapter--especially the death of the mage tree--so it good to know some of the emotion came through. I feared it was too long, it is nearly 1400 words, but I couldn't see where to divide it or how to cut it any more.

Is there a reason that you haven't shared the physical descriptions, except that the Mage Flute is a fife. Is the wood black like ebony, since one of the names is Black Forest fife?
In general, this is a striking chapter. The magical power of the Mage Flute is vividly shown through the tingling effect on Piper as it allows him to channel its music.
Excellent last sentence where he reaches for his own familiar flute for comfort and grounding after the mystical experience.
Now that he has successfully claimed his musical and magical birthright, I am anxious to read what happens next in Piper's new world which is really his home.

I enjoyed the history of the Mage trees and the fact that musical instruments were made from the heart wood of the last tree. Thank you for an excellent review and for your insights. I love how you are into the story and have your ideas on how the characters should behave. Thank you for sharing. I pictured them sitting on the edge of their chairs, but you're right, Lynx might have trouble sitting still. LOL
About the flute and type of wood--I haven't emphasized this, but I am locating this story in thirteenth century Germany in the region of Hanover and Hamelin. The Black Forest is a real forest in Germany and near the location where Piper grows up in the story, so the fife is named for the location not the type of wood that the flute is made of. During this time period the modern flute did not exist as we know it and similar instruments could have been called pipes or flutes. Fife was a term used during this time, also sometimes referred to as a small flute in many cases. I am imagining Piper's main flute was actually a block-flute or what we now know as a recorder, but there were many types during this time. I hope to have him play the double flute at some point as it was popular during this period of time. I did mention in one chapter a while back that Piper's main flute is a rosewood flute. I am imagining the mage tree wood is similar since rosewood is often used for instruments because it produces such a nice sound. I am not certain there was a "Castle Welf", but the Welf family controlled much of the area where this story takes place and had several castles throughout portions of Germany during the Middle Ages. Sometimes they even swapped castles depending on needs and preferences of the family so an uncle might swap with a nephew or cousins might swap regions and relocate, etc.
I plan to share some of this historical background in the notes at the end of the book.
Sorry for the long answer. Maybe it was more background than you wanted to know.

This is, by far, the bast chapter to date.

Just one small suggestion: I would delete 'of' in the following. 'Off of' sounds a bit clumsy and there is no need for the 'of'.
