This is a very good story, Bill. No wiggle room to fool around with the rules when outside the country. Others aren't so lenient. I can see where the funk was lifted, but then returned. Best of luck in the contest. Marilyn

Isn't that just the way that life goes. You try to dredge up a little joy in your otherwise drab life and some class A butt hole is just itching to take a dump on your dreams, and then order you to pay up and then clean up, while you accept the blame of his having to take a dump on you and your day.

Hey, if the wanted their trees protected, they should have said something earlier! This is a really good story; since it's one you'll not forget, you have easily told it as a story the reader won't forget either. Nice one!

Wow an interesting tale from the real world and especially the DMZ in South Korea - humankind does appear to have a long and arduous road to travel in terms of understanding!! presently reading a short novel set in South Korea ' Hiver a Sotcho'by Elisa Shua Dusapin -gives an interesting insight!! thanks for sharing

Granted, laws must be obeyed, especially in a foreign country; but, if I'd been that commanding officer, I would have paid it out of my own pocket and kept my mouth shut to the troops. Excellent job presenting this story. Wish I had a six star to give.

Thanks, Wry. What I recall clearly is the HQ lieutenant explaining to our warrant officer the situation, once it had gotten back to the rear that this had happened. I think the situation must have gotten blown out of proportion at some level.

It also makes me think that sometimes governments everywhere, or even most or all governments everywhere in this imperfect world will prioritize things very differently from a true Christian point of view. Was there really an officer liaison who was in charge of making sure no one had a Christmas tree, even one for the whole company? It sounds like the government part of the military was more interested in making money than serving and protecting. I think even a child or teenager would comprehend the sadness and alienation produced by this act. Thanks for sharing.

My understanding was that the United Nations had spent a billion dollars reforesting South Korea after the Korean War and placed protective punitive fines to keep people from harvesting lumber there for at least two generation.

Ah, I think reforesting is a good idea, since I still have memories of Yellowstone National Park burning and seeing teensy 3-foot trees in 1998. Two generations sounds like a long time to wait, 40 years or so?
