Daaayum! The one guy just called the other guy's wife fat and ugly and the first guy didn't even flinch..... that's cold, man. Soooo.... she lost the family's pet pig trying to pull that insider...? LOL! Nah, I get it -- I read the author notes. :) :) Non-sequiturs seem best applied to logic and debates... at least that's the only application I've seen them in.... still we all gotta just throw one out there now and again that's funny to us (even when we know it won't 'resonate' with others) -- you and I must have been on the same wavelength cuz I did the same thing a few days ago- LOL! ;) Thanx for sharing and best of luck, sir! ;) Yvette

Without the note I have confused and befuddled every reviewer. Your review denotes both the need for that explanation and your sole ability to leap to the disjointed punch line. Thank you. There is no expectation that the judges will see the humor.

I've thought and thought about this and still don't get the punchline. How did she lose fat in a poker game? Inside strait I understand. That didn't help. I'm confused and befuddled, but that's my natural state. Help.

The humor should be in the non sequitur punch line. Trying to fill an inside straight is a sucker bet in poker and almost a sure loser. The information leading up to this becomes superfluous. I don?t expect the contest judges will see this either. Perhaps I should add this non sequitur explanation in my notes.

That was my first thought, but I thought it was a non sequitor and didn't follow from what came before, so that ruined it for me.

Kind of the definition of a non sequitur.

You lost me with this one Bill, I know nothing about Poker and wouldn't know a fat hand it stared me in the face, but I'm sure some will get the joke, love Dolly x

The humor lies in the fact that the poker hand is a nonsequetor to the rest. Don?t feel bad, no one gets it.

Hmm. Playin' to an inside straight is a sucker bet. Are you suggesting she had liposuction? Would explain the weight loss. And, I suppose you could refer to the procedure as 'poke her'. That's the best I can come up with, Bill. Am I close?

Best of luck.

Peace, Lee

While I like the dialogue format in your story, I must admit, except for
"I would say she divorced you, but she'd still have more than a hundred pounds of ugly fat left." I fail to get the humor. The only poker terms I know are straight, flush, hit me and play close to the vest and I can't relate any of those to weight loss. But still well written.

When my husband was in the Air Force there was a guy with a weird sense of humor. When he told a joke no one got, he belly laughed and said, ? I just kill myself!?

This meets the contest requirements splendidly as you deliver a complete and engaging story within the word count limitation allotted. The content is clever as lots of folks will connect with the poker theme. Good luck in the judging and thank you very much for sharing it.

I am sure that there is something clever in this, however, since I am not a poker player, I do not get it. Please explain. I would love to know or learn how to apply the message or meaning.

Trying to fill an inside straight is a sucker bet, nomi.

Thank you, one day I will write about how naive I was to get into a poker game where I did not know what I was doing. I was told I would get back any money I lost. I lost everything and had to go a whole month without any money. Best lesson I was ever taught.

As I have absolutely no idea how poker is played the humor is lost on me. I did get the humor of Carl's snide remark but that would mean that his friend was only 100 pounds. Poor guy - needs to eat something.
