A wonderful entry for the contest. This flows well. It is a wonderful story, and it keeps the reader engaged in the story. Well done. Good luck in the contest.

I can see why the wife would be horrified at the mention of traveling across the ocean. I know his route is no where near the chaos, but still why take the chance? It's well-written your character's dialogue seem believable. Great job.

Great entry, Ulla. The story is an indication that you are well-travelled and up-to-date on the current events.
You leave the reader wanting to read more of your work, which I thoroughly enjoy.

I guess the hubby was surprised to hear his wife swear for the first time, after he tells her he's booked the holiday of a lifetime, but she's aware of travelling through the Suez Canal, and is afraid of the Iranians,is the marriage after fifty years on the rocks? So well done , good entry in this contest Ulla, well done, good luck, blessings,Roy

Thank you so much, Roy. Yeah, the swearing was a shock, but also that she got the geography wrong, plus, so far a drone didn't shoot anything down. No wonder her husband is in despair.

Talk about putting us in the middle of current events. I think you did a great job with the contest, and used that opening line to sketch out this great argument about a vacation between husband and wife. Just goes to show how unsettling world events can upset the best laid plans. I liked how you built up the frustrations and we can hear the voices rising and the curse words flying. estory

Modern-day problems stir up old-time fears. The xenophobia of the wife is a reckoning of current world affairs. Good piece. Well written.

LOL I will be honest I don't know where the Hormuz Strait is. But I'm horrible in geography. I do know where quite a few things are, but still. LOL I enjoyed reading your contest entry. It meets all the requirements of a short story. Thank you for sharing and I wish you good luck.

Thanks so very much, Barbara. She did get the geography wrong. Granted its in the geneal area but hundreds of miles away. All the best. Ulla:)))
Comment from Loren .
I'm with the wife on this one. With all the unrest in the world today, why sail into harm's way? Of course, where is anyone safe anymore? I guess it's a matter of a sense of adventure and daring, but there has to be some common sense involved as well. It is a sad commentary on today's world that others can so upset our plans. Best of luck in the contest. Loren

Hi Loren, thank you so much.I understand your concern, but still, the Suez Canal is hundreds of miles away. But you're right. It's a sad world that we always have to think where we're going. But danger is everywhere. I flew for twenty years and terrorist attacks were always on the for of our mind. All best. Ulla:))

I'm with her. I wouldn't go anywhere near Iran. Hubby was so proud of himself, but the wife wanted no part of his surprise gift. Believable and fun conversation. She was adamant in her decision. Well done. Good luck in the contest. Nancy:)

Good job! You kept it current with the current world news, so we know it's fresh and original. I wouldn't want to be there either, now or at any time. Scary places in the Middle East. Best to avoid them. I suggest flying to an eastern port and boarding a ship there. Probably faster, too. There's nothing to see crossing the Atlantic, except perhaps hurricanes. :)
