A delightful story about harnessing a horse fly as an inexpensive entertainment. As you note, as with playing in cardboard boxes, play things don't need to be expensive. That must have been a huge fly.

Horse flies come, horse flies go. I hope you were brought up to respect living things and didn't go smashing too many critters, but I hate horse flies anyway... they bite.
What a novel idea to have one tethered for enjoyment. I would have loved that too as a kid. Neat story.

That's one heck of a trick, getting a slipknot around a horsefly and tying it to turn it into a free toy. You're Mom was clearly a talented and clever person!

How wonderful, Patricia. I'm afraid children in this day and age are missing out on so many opportunities to expand their imaginations. What a marvelous childhood experience and kudos to your mom for being so creative. Regards, Lou

It's funny the things kids find to amuse themselves. One of my big amusements was fireflies. I'd love to catch them and then set them free. The story is well-written interesting, brought back a pleasant memory, thank you for that, take care.

A very well-written non-fiction story. The time we grew up we have to use our imagination to stay occupied at all times, our parents were busy and do not want children under their feet all the time.

Lol! What a clever thing for your mom to do (but probably not fun for the fly). And how brave and fast of you to catch a horsefly and play with it. Certainly better than some electronic game - as you were interacting with nature.

I know what you mean about being a poor kid growing up on a farm. My brothers and I rode stick horses and used corn silk for manes. We pretended we were cowboys. Flying the horse fly was your way of using your imagination, pretending it was a plane. Excellent description, and a very charming story. Apostrophe s for kids in your last line (kid's). judi

We did this too. My brothers had so much fun with their remote control planes...lol actually more plain than plane...the only jet involved was that the flies were jet black. Lol
It's amazing what you do without a tv.
God bless
