Ha! I have had a few as well. the most recent one is a person who said I had a very confusing story, and I also had a whole lot of different kind of mistakes. But, and hears the kicker... they refused to provide an example. Said it was a waste of time. How am I supposed to improve when I don't even know what I need to work on?
Some of the time I think some of the people try to goad you into making a nasty reply so you get told off by the site.
What do you think?

Hi Bill, thank you so much. This was a four and that's alright if it's deserved. But to be told she only gives five star to a unique voice and a writing style nobody else could easily copy. Well, that hurts. She could as well have told me my writing is crap. And maybe it is. Sigh! I've tried so hard. All the best. Ulla:))

Bad reviews come from one of three sources, I think. The newbie who thinks he/she is the messiah coming on the scene to identify work that isn?t Moby Dick, the Magna Carta, or the Bible; the avenger, taking the four you may have given his/her pet piece and trashing whatever you posted, probably sight unseen; or the Fanstorian who came over on the Mayflower and thinks good writers died out with Charles Dickens (or him/herself).

Oh, Bill, what am I to say now. My ancestors on my father's side came with the Mayflower. I'm a direct descendant. You don't know it yet! It's all to be in my story. Where does that leave me???

My reference to the Mayflower is sarcasm for folks who are early members on the site and find that no one is as good as they were.

That said, this is an excellent entry into the contest, and I wish you much luck with the Contest Committee. Your voicing is completely unique and your story well-written and a fascinating read. :)

There's always a few nasty parkers around, Ulla. Now I am waiting to find out what Tommy learns about who actually fired the missile and how you team gets on with your mission.
That said, this is an excellent entry into the contest, and I wish you much luck with the Contest Committee. Your voicing is completely unique and your story well-written and a fascinating read. :)

It's good that you handled getting a bad review so well. I don't handle bad reviews at all well. I've simply been doing this too long. And frankly, I think my writing is genius, and I don't ultimately care if people don't agree with me. I get angry with a bad review, but I know a reviewer is always wrong, so I get over it after a month or so.

I think this is a great exercise for you, doing dialogue. Here I think you let the personalities fly, and the conversation seems very real and flows along right from the characters. You can feel the tension developing as these two argue it out, and I think writing more like this will help the dialogue in your novel. It's really a matter of putting yourself in the shoes of your characters, imagining what they are feeling, and letting them say, in their own words, what they are feeling. As to being bland, and voiceless, I think you should ignore that. I think you have a great story here, but you need to bring it to life more in dialogue and developing characters and relationships. The last couple of chapters were better, in my opinion. You have to remember that the public is your audience, and every critique can give you a window on how others read your writing and how it is being perceived. Work harder and improve. estory

There are those who are just naturally mean and love to cause pain and therefore reduce the competition. Just thank them and move along or just move along and ignore them.
